Adult Sunday School Sept. 16-30

Adult Sunday School

September 16, 23, 30 • 10-10:50am

Jennifer HolbergOur first series of the 2012-13 year will feature guest speaker Jennifer Holberg from Calvin College. Professor Holberg has taught literature and writing at Calvin College since 1998. She was chosen as “Professor of the Year” in 2002 by the senior class, and her book, Shouts and Whispers: 21 Writers Speak About Their Writing and Their Faith, was published by Eerdmans and received a starred review from Publishers Weekly.

Topic: Stories That “Preach”

Human beings seem to have a natural affinity with narrative. From the earliest times, we’ve used stories to make sense of our lives-and that’s still true in contemporary culture. How, then, can literature give us “more to be Christian with”? In this class, we’ll consider some approaches and discuss a few examples together.

Whether reading her book or listening to her speak, you’ll walk away assured of two things: you are not alone, and God is good!

Karen’s openness and honesty, and her willingness to share from her heart about her struggles – and the hope she’s found – have made her a popular speaker for women’s and mothering groups. She has an engaging style and effectively mixes humor with deep sharing to elicit both laughter and tears from her audiences.

Slave: The Hidden Truth About Your Identity in Christ
by John MacArthur

Did you know that every time you utter the word “Lord,” you make a subtle yet profound declaration that God is your Master and you belong to him? Best-selling author MacArthur explores what it means to follow Christ without hesitation–and why we as believers should consider ourselves slaves who were bought at a price.
