Some things in our lives seem so insignificant that we pay little or no attention to them. But some seemingly little things make a very big difference in the health of our lives, our relationships, our marriages, and our families. Varying our course just a few degrees on a compass can, over miles, cause us to end up in an entirely different place. For several weeks, we’re going to look at little thoughts, little habits, little actions, little words and little prayers that make a BIG difference in life. Understanding these little things, and putting them into action in your life, can, over time, transform lives, relationships, and even destinies. Join us, and bring someone you care about!

The Sermon on the Mount, preached by our Lord Jesus himself, reveals the heart behind God’s law. Jesus’ revolutionary and penetrating teachings will transform the lives of any who dare put them into practice. In this second of our three summer sermon series on this great sermon, we will discuss “True Worship.” We will look at how disciples of Christ are changed from the inside out as they worship God not money or stuff, as they develop a secret life before God, and as they put the pursuit of God’s Kingdom before all other life endeavors.

A Father’s Heart
Series: Father's Day
Malachi 4:2-6 • sermon notes below

fathersheart-takeaway

The day of the Lord is a time when our Heavenly Father will make all things right.
- The day of the Lord has already come in Christ, and will fully come when Christ returns.

When earthly fathers are filled with the Spirit of the Heavenly Father, they will experience His Fatherhood and express His Fatherhood.

Children long for and need fathers who express the nature of our Heavenly Father.
- Children need a father’s unconditional love.
- Children need a father’s blessing.
- Children need a father’s presence.
- Children need a father’s protection.
- Children need a father’s provision.
- Children need a father’s guidance.
- Children need a father’s discipline.

Our Response: God is the perfect Father for whom we long; receive his fatherly love, and trust him to empower you to express his life-giving love to others.

Life Application Questions
- What traits of our Heavenly Father’s love do you need to receive today?
- Are there areas where your earthly father fell short where you need to receive healing from your Heavenly Father?
- If you are a Father, which traits of your Heavenly Father’s love do you most need to show to your children this week?

The Reformed View of Baptism
Acts 2:38-39 and others • sermon notes below

suntak-2016-0612

Should infants be baptized? The Bible implies, and history confirms, that children were baptized as an expression of God’s Covenant Promises.
- God’s covenant is not with individuals in isolation, but with families.
- The practice of infant baptism was nearly universal in the early church.

Does baptism save us? No, we are saved as we trust in Jesus to forgive us and give us new birth by the Spirit; baptism is a sign and seal of Christ’s saving work.

Are those who die in infancy saved? We believe that children who have not rejected Christ are saved.

What responsibility does infant baptism place upon parents? We must embrace God’s promise for our children, raising them in homes full of faith and truth.

What response does infant baptism call for from our children? Baptism testifies that the Spirit is at work in our children; they must respond to God’s work by putting their trust in Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

Our Response: Let us embrace the promised work of the Holy Spirit proclaimed in our children’s baptism, and together raise them in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Life Application Questions
- Do you believe that the Holy Spirit is working in your children right now, and do you watch for and encourage what God is doing in their lives?
- How is God prompting you to express your faith to your children? (Bible reading, family prayers, talking about the sermon, asking about Sunday school)
- How might God be prompting you to participate in raising the children of our congregation in the training and instruction of the Lord?

Why do we baptize? Because the Bible commands us to baptize as an expression of our faith in Christ. What is baptism? Baptism is an outward expression of inward grace – the saving and transforming work of the Holy Spirit. - Baptism proclaims that our sins have been washed away. - Baptism proclaims that we have been raised to new life in Christ. - Baptism proclaims that we are included in Christ and in his New Covenant Community. Our Response: Embrace the biblical truths proclaimed in baptism: your sins are washed away, you are a new creation in Christ, and you are enfolded into God’s family! Life Application Questions - Have you put your faith in Jesus to wash your sins away and give you new life? If in doubt, make that decision today! - Have you professed your faith through baptism and through public testimony? If not, talk to me or an Elder or mature believer. - Who do you know that needs to receive the saving work of Jesus in his or her life? What is God challenging you to do to help them take a step closer to God? - Which of God’s promises expressed in your baptism do you need to embrace today? The Lord’s Supper
    1 Corinthians 11:17-34 • sermon notes below

    suntak-2016-0529

Jesus himself instituted the Lord’s Supper
    - Jesus commanded us to celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
    - The early church celebrated the Lord’s Supper weekly as a full meal.
    - Christ is spiritually present in the bread and cup.

The Lord’s Supper looks to the past, the present, and the future.
    - Contemplate the Past - Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension.
    - Celebrate the Present - Christ’s presence, people, and power.
    - Anticipate the Future - the wedding feast.

We come to the Lord’s Supper as one body.

The Lord is present and nourishes us at the Table.

The Lord’s Supper is for all who believe in Jesus.
    - Imperfect people can come!
    - Young children can come!

Our Response: Our Lord invites all who trust in him to come to his Table so that he might nourish our souls, strengthen our faith, and remind us of his amazing grace.

The Bible exhorts us to not waste our lives.

Rather we are to be filled with the Spirit.
- We need to be continuously filled with the Spirit. We have all of the Spirit, but does the Spirit have all of us?

So that we might walk by the Spirit.

- Those filled with the Spirit are a thankful people.
- Those filled with the Spirit are a submitting people.

Our Response: The Lord wants us to yield fully to him so that he might continuously fill us with His Spirit, resulting in lives overflowing with singing, thankfulness, and healthy service.

The Bible teaches that you are light! (5:8-9)

Paul exhorts us to live as light! (5:1-13)
    - Love like Jesus.
    - Be pure in word, action, and heart.
    - Be a God-pleaser.
    - Shine light on the darkness.

Paul reminds us to live wisely! (5:15-17)
    - Watch your step.
    - Use your time well.
    - Discern God’s will.

Our Response: The Bible teaches that you are light in the Lord. So you must live as light, watching your step and using your time well in ways pleasing to the Lord.

    Life Application Questions
    - What does Paul mean when he says that “you are light in the Lord.” How should that impact how you live?
    - Is there a place in your life where the Lord is challenging you to be pure in word, action, or thought?

    The Freedom of Forgiveness
    Ephesians 4:26-27, 31-32 • sermon notes below

    suntak-2016-0501

    1. Anger, bitterness, and malice
    - Anger is a natural response to a sense that someone has crossed a line
    - Bitterness is allowing the anger to fester, not letting it go
    - Malice is acting out of anger or bitterness to even the score

    2. Why forgive?
    - Matthew 18:21-35
    - Because God forgave you
    - So you can be free

    3. Forgiveness is not…
    - Minimizing the seriousness of the offense
    - Forgetting (Isaiah 43:25)
    - Ignoring unhealthy behavior (Luke 16:10)
    - Inconsistent with justice (Romans 13:3-4, Romans 12:19)

    4. Forgiveness is…
    - Releasing a person from a debt they owe (1 Corinthians 13:5, Psalms 103:11-12)
    - An act of faith in God to make all wrongs right (Romans 12:19-21)
    - An act of the will
    - A choice to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:19-21)
    - A key that sets you free from the past and allows you to heal
    - An expression of Christ in you (Ephesians 4:32)

Our Response: The Bible commands you to forgive as God forgave you; this will free and heal your soul.

Steps to take to forgive from your heart
    - In prayer, declare your decision to forgive, then ask God to bless the person
    - Live out your forgiveness in word and deed
    - When possible, seek reconciliation

    Searching questions
    - What important truths about forgiveness has God taught you from his Word today?
    - Is there a place where you feel bound by hurt and bitterness in your past?
    - Who has God placed on your heart to forgive? What is it, specifically, that you need to forgive? How has this impacted you?
    - What step can you take today to begin the process of forgiveness?

Ephesians 4:17-28 • sermon notes below

    suntak-2016-0417

    1. The Bible teaches that the human problem is hardness of heart. (Ephesians 4:17-19, Psalms 51:5, Romans 5:12)

    2. Through faith in Christ the believer has put off the old man and put on the new man. (Ephesians 4: 20-24, Colossians 3:9-10, Galatians 2:20, Galatians 3:27, Romans 6:6, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ezekiel 36:-27)

    3. God’s truth renews our minds, transforming our perspective. (Ephesians 4:23, Colossians 3:5-14, Romans 12:2, Romans 6:6)

    4. God’s truth renews our minds, transforming our behavior.

Our Response: The Bible teaches that you are a new person in Christ, that the old sinner is gone, and that you must think that truth and live that truth!

    Life Application Questions:
    •  Where in your life is there a sinful habit of the old self that you need to put off? What is holding you back from putting off that old habit?
    •  What steps can you take today to be renewed in the spirit of your mind?
    •  What behavior consistent with your new self do you need to put on? What can you do this week to put on that new character trait?

True Unity (Life Together - week 2)

The foundation of Christian unity is divine, not human (Eph. 4:1-3)

    - We are one in the Spirit who has united us as one body and called us to one hope
    - We are one in the Lord - the one baptism is an expression of the one faith in our one Lord (1 Cor. 12:13, Acts 2:38)
    - We are one in the Father - one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all (Deut. 6:4)

We are one, so we must live like we are one (Eph. 4:3, 1 Cor. 3:16)

When we are not one, we cannot live as if we are one (John 14:6, Acts 4:12, 1 Cor. 6:9)

    Our Response

God has made the Church one, so we must live as one, in all love, truth and purity.

The Road to Faith
Holy Week - Easter
Luke 24:13-35 • sermon notes below

suntak-2016-0327

If the resurrection didn’t happen, Jesus was a fraud.

If the resurrection didn’t happen, Jesus could not give us life.
- John 11:25-26, 1 Corinthians 15:14-17

As we walk the road of life, Christ will come to those with…

Broken Hearts - When all seems dark. The men on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24 were deeply discouraged - their hope was dead.

Burning Hearts - Because he lives. The fire of hope and peace begin to burn in their hearts as they realize Jesus’ death wasn’t proof that he wasn’t the Messiah, but proof that we was the Messiah.
- These men believed because of the confirmation of the scriptures (Micah 5:2, Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:1-2, Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Mark 8:31)
- These men believed because of the historical evidence for the resurrection (their eyes were opened and the recognized Jesus)
- These men believed because of the inner witness of the Holy Spirit

Beating Hearts - Receiving life. When we encounter Christ, we receive a new kind of life (John 11:25-26, Isaiah 53::5, Romans 10:9, John 1:12).

Our Response
Jesus did die and Jesus did rise, therefore...
- He is who he said he is, the only Savior and the Lord of all.
- He has the power to give you his life.
Give Jesus your broken heart; he will give you a heart that burns with hope and that beats in rhythm with his heart.

In this final of our three summer sermon series on this great sermon, we will discuss “True Discernment.” We will discover secrets of wisdom, self-awareness, and discernment, and we’ll get a beautiful snapshot into the heart and character of God.
