Baptism
Acts 2:38-39 and others • sermon notes below

suntak-2016-0605

Why do we baptize? Because the Bible commands us to baptize as an expression of our faith in Christ. What is baptism? Baptism is an outward expression of inward grace – the saving and transforming work of the Holy Spirit. - Baptism proclaims that our sins have been washed away. - Baptism proclaims that we have been raised to new life in Christ. - Baptism proclaims that we are included in Christ and in his New Covenant Community. Our Response: Embrace the biblical truths proclaimed in baptism: your sins are washed away, you are a new creation in Christ, and you are enfolded into God’s family! Life Application Questions - Have you put your faith in Jesus to wash your sins away and give you new life? If in doubt, make that decision today! - Have you professed your faith through baptism and through public testimony? If not, talk to me or an Elder or mature believer. - Who do you know that needs to receive the saving work of Jesus in his or her life? What is God challenging you to do to help them take a step closer to God? - Which of God’s promises expressed in your baptism do you need to embrace today? Today’s Songs Blessed Be Your Name How Great Is Our God How Great Thou Art You Never Let Go Lead Me To The Cross

    - Jesus commanded us to celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
    - The early church celebrated the Lord’s Supper weekly as a full meal.
    - Christ is spiritually present in the bread and cup.

    - Contemplate the Past - Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension.
    - Celebrate the Present - Christ’s presence, people, and power.
    - Anticipate the Future - the wedding feast.

We come to the Lord’s Supper as one body.

The Lord is present and nourishes us at the Table.

The Lord’s Supper is for all who believe in Jesus.
    - Imperfect people can come!
    - Young children can come!

Our Response: Our Lord invites all who trust in him to come to his Table so that he might nourish our souls, strengthen our faith, and remind us of his amazing grace.

    Life Application Questions
    - Do you come to the Lord’s Table in faith, expecting to be nourished and strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit?
    - As you partake, do you discern and honor the people who belong to the body of Christ? What person or group of people might you exclude in your heart?
    - What can you do this week to help your children come to a deeper understanding of the Lord’s Table? How can you prepare your own heart this week to receive next week?

So that we might walk by the Spirit.
    - Those filled with the Spirit are a singing people.
    - Those filled with the Spirit are a thankful people.
    - Those filled with the Spirit are a submitting people.

Our Response: The Lord wants us to yield fully to him so that he might continuously fill us with His Spirit, resulting in lives overflowing with singing, thankfulness, and healthy service.

    Life Application Questions

    The Freedom of Forgiveness
    Ephesians 4:26-27, 31-32 • sermon notes below

    suntak-2016-0501

    1. Anger, bitterness, and malice
    - Anger is a natural response to a sense that someone has crossed a line
    - Bitterness is allowing the anger to fester, not letting it go
    - Malice is acting out of anger or bitterness to even the score

    2. Why forgive?
    - Matthew 18:21-35
    - Because God forgave you
    - So you can be free

    3. Forgiveness is not…
    - Minimizing the seriousness of the offense
    - Forgetting (Isaiah 43:25)
    - Ignoring unhealthy behavior (Luke 16:10)
    - Inconsistent with justice (Romans 13:3-4, Romans 12:19)

    4. Forgiveness is…
    - Releasing a person from a debt they owe (1 Corinthians 13:5, Psalms 103:11-12)
    - An act of faith in God to make all wrongs right (Romans 12:19-21)
    - An act of the will
    - A choice to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:19-21)
    - A key that sets you free from the past and allows you to heal
    - An expression of Christ in you (Ephesians 4:32)

Our Response: The Bible commands you to forgive as God forgave you; this will free and heal your soul.

Steps to take to forgive from your heart
    - In prayer, declare your decision to forgive, then ask God to bless the person
    - Live out your forgiveness in word and deed

    Searching questions
    - What important truths about forgiveness has God taught you from his Word today?
    - Is there a place where you feel bound by hurt and bitterness in your past?
    - Who has God placed on your heart to forgive? What is it, specifically, that you need to forgive? How has this impacted you?

    4. God’s truth renews our minds, transforming our behavior.

Our Response: The Bible teaches that you are a new person in Christ, that the old sinner is gone, and that you must think that truth and live that truth!

Luke 24:13-35 • sermon notes below

    suntak-2016-0327

If the resurrection didn’t happen, Jesus was a fraud.

If the resurrection didn’t happen, Jesus could not give us life.
    - John 11:25-26, 1 Corinthians 15:14-17

As we walk the road of life, Christ will come to those with…

Broken Hearts - When all seems dark. The men on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24 were deeply discouraged - their hope was dead.

Burning Hearts - Because he lives. The fire of hope and peace begin to burn in their hearts as they realize Jesus’ death wasn’t proof that he wasn’t the Messiah, but proof that we was the Messiah.
    - These men believed because of the confirmation of the scriptures (Micah 5:2, Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:1-2, Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Mark 8:31)
    - These men believed because of the historical evidence for the resurrection (their eyes were opened and the recognized Jesus)
    - These men believed because of the inner witness of the Holy Spirit

Beating Hearts - Receiving life. When we encounter Christ, we receive a new kind of life (John 11:25-26, Isaiah 53::5, Romans 10:9, John 1:12).

    Our Response
Jesus did die and Jesus did rise, therefore...
    - He is who he said he is, the only Savior and the Lord of all.
    - He has the power to give you his life.
Give Jesus your broken heart; he will give you a heart that burns with hope and that beats in rhythm with his heart.

    - The Lamb of God - the Savior (John 1:29-31, Exodus 12)
    - In Revelation 5 we see both of these images, the Lion and the Lamb, together (Revelation 5:5-10)

Jesus had to die because of God’s justice
