Spirit-Filled Living
Ephesians 5:18-21 • sermon notes below

suntak-2016-0522

The Bible exhorts us to not waste our lives.

Rather we are to be filled with the Spirit.
- We need to be continuously filled with the Spirit. We have all of the Spirit, but does the Spirit have all of us?
- Being filled with the Spirit is our responsibility but God’s work.

So that we might walk by the Spirit.
- Those filled with the Spirit are a singing people.
- Those filled with the Spirit are a thankful people.
- Those filled with the Spirit are a submitting people.

Our Response: The Lord wants us to yield fully to him so that he might continuously fill us with His Spirit, resulting in lives overflowing with singing, thankfulness, and healthy service.

Life Application Questions
- What is holding you back from giving the Lord full control of your life? What do you need to surrender or change to make your life fully available to God?
- How can you express joy and thankfulness in your life? Where in your life can you express honor and submission this week?

    - Watch your step.
    - Use your time well.
    - Discern God’s will.

    The Freedom of Forgiveness
    Ephesians 4:26-27, 31-32 • sermon notes below

    suntak-2016-0501

    1. Anger, bitterness, and malice
    - Anger is a natural response to a sense that someone has crossed a line
    - Bitterness is allowing the anger to fester, not letting it go
    - Malice is acting out of anger or bitterness to even the score

    2. Why forgive?
    - Matthew 18:21-35
    - Because God forgave you
    - So you can be free

    3. Forgiveness is not…
    - Minimizing the seriousness of the offense
    - Forgetting (Isaiah 43:25)
    - Ignoring unhealthy behavior (Luke 16:10)
    - Inconsistent with justice (Romans 13:3-4, Romans 12:19)

    4. Forgiveness is…
    - Releasing a person from a debt they owe (1 Corinthians 13:5, Psalms 103:11-12)
    - An act of faith in God to make all wrongs right (Romans 12:19-21)
    - An act of the will
    - A choice to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:19-21)
    - A key that sets you free from the past and allows you to heal
    - An expression of Christ in you (Ephesians 4:32)

Our Response: The Bible commands you to forgive as God forgave you; this will free and heal your soul.

Steps to take to forgive from your heart
    - In prayer, declare your decision to forgive, then ask God to bless the person
    - Live out your forgiveness in word and deed
    - When possible, seek reconciliation

    Searching questions
    - What important truths about forgiveness has God taught you from his Word today?
    - Is there a place where you feel bound by hurt and bitterness in your past?
    - Who has God placed on your heart to forgive? What is it, specifically, that you need to forgive? How has this impacted you?
    - What step can you take today to begin the process of forgiveness?

    3. God’s truth renews our minds, transforming our perspective. (Ephesians 4:23, Colossians 3:5-14, Romans 12:2, Romans 6:6)

    4. God’s truth renews our minds, transforming our behavior.

Our Response: The Bible teaches that you are a new person in Christ, that the old sinner is gone, and that you must think that truth and live that truth!

    Life Application Questions:
    •  Where in your life is there a sinful habit of the old self that you need to put off? What is holding you back from putting off that old habit?

True Unity (Life Together - week 2)

The foundation of Christian unity is divine, not human (Eph. 4:1-3)

    - We are one in the Spirit who has united us as one body and called us to one hope
    - We are one in the Lord - the one baptism is an expression of the one faith in our one Lord (1 Cor. 12:13, Acts 2:38)
    - We are one in the Father - one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all (Deut. 6:4)

We are one, so we must live like we are one (Eph. 4:3, 1 Cor. 3:16)

When we are not one, we cannot live as if we are one (John 14:6, Acts 4:12, 1 Cor. 6:9)

    Our Response

God has made the Church one, so we must live as one, in all love, truth and purity.
